Management
Students electing to major in Management at UT-Pan American can elect to emphasize
work either in the area of Human Resources Management or Production and Operations
Management. Careers in each of these areas are described in the section below.
Human Resources Management
The program in Human Resources Management is primarily concerned with the management
of the human resources of the organization. This involves the areas of Personnel
Administration, Training, Human Relations, and Wage and Salary Administration.
Human resource management activities are present in virtually all fields of economic
and social endeavor, including manufacturing, construction, public administration,
retailing, banking, data processing and transportation. Skills developed and
concepts learned in this this area should contribute to the student obtaining
a managerial position in a broad variety of organizations.
Success in the field of human resources management requires the ability to work
closely with individuals from diverse backgrounds; especially in supervisory
relationships. Ability in person to person communications and in organization
design are especially desirable in the business and governmental sectors.
Production and Operations Management
The program in production and operations management is primarily concerned with
the management of the physical resources of an organization. Any production process
can be viewed as an input-output system for some fundamental transformation process.
Operations management is required in order to design, construct, and operate
the transformation process.
Operations management activities are present in such diverse fields as manufacturing,
construction, transportation,communication, mining, petroleum,retailing, wholesaling,
banking, and data-processing. The importance of operations management activities
has recently been recognized in hospitals, libraries, educational systems, and
government activities. Operations management groups are also being organized
to design and operate programs for the management of urban affairs, natural resources,
and the environment. Social and environmental systems must be designed more effectively
and managed more efficiently.
The production and operations management program includes systems analysis, model
building, and the use of mathematical programming. A major element of the program
will be the study of the decision-making process.
Many executives are developed within a particular company; however, the specialized
training offered to the college student may provide entry into many management
positions. A bachelor's degree with a major in production and operations management
is highly desirable.
Success in the field of production and operations management requires the ability
to visualize long-run needs and obstacles as well as the ability to administer
short-run programs. In addition, the manager must be skilled in working with
people and in evaluating reports and performance.
