Operations management activities are present in such diverse fields as manufacturing, construction, transportation, communication, mining, petroleum, retailing, wholesaling, banking, and data-processing. The importance of operations management activities has recently been recognized in hospitals, libraries, educational systems, and government activities. Social and environmental systems must be designed more effectively and managed more efficiently.
The production and operations management program includes systems analysis, model building, and the use of mathematical programming. A major element of the program will be the study of the decision-making process.
Many executives are developed within a particular company; however, the specialized training offered to the college student may provide entry into many management positions. A bachelor's degree with a major in production and operations management is highly desirable.
Success in the field of production and operations management requires the ability to visualize long-run needs and obstacles as well as the ability to administer short-run programs. In addition, the manager must be skilled in working with people and in evaluating reports and performance.
