Chapter 2 Glossary

Aggregators
Aggregators, such as NewsGator and AmphetaDesk , allow users to subscribe to feeds from sources as diverse as the BBC, Sci-Fi Today, Slashdot and thousands of bloggers across the world. The services work by checking an Internet address at a regular interval, usually once an hour, to see if new content has been added.
The feeds are written according to one of a few competing shared specifications, which are collectively referred to as RSS, which stands, depending on who you talk to, for really simple syndication or rich site summary.

People Aggregators

New jargon term for conferences people attend.

Blog, Blogging

A frequent, chronological publication of personal thoughts and Web links.

A blog is often a mixture of what is happening in a person's life and what is happening on the Web, a kind of hybrid diary/guide site, although there are as many unique types of blogs as there are people.

People maintained blogs long before the term was coined, but the trend gained momentum with the introduction of automated published systems, most notably Blogger at blogger.com. Thousands of people use services such as Blogger to simplify and accelerate the publishing process.

Blogs are alternatively called web logs or weblogs . However, "blog" seems less likely to cause confusion, as "web log" can also mean a server's log files.

DRM

Digital Radio Mondiale is a global trend towards the adoption of digital technology in radio and communications, especially for distribution and transmission. Digitalisation offers many substantial advantages to national / international broadcasters and infocasters.

We are seeing the introduction of high quality delivery system in homes. FM sound broadcasting is gradually moving to a DAB standard.

But coverage on FM 88-108 MHz (VHF) is limited. For many national and international broadcasters, the advantages of a complementary digital broadcast system BELOW 30 MHz are becoming clear. However, the limited fidelity of existing AM services is causing listeners to search for other alternatives.

Implementation of digital radio in today's AM bands (i.e. long-, medium- and short-wave) will enable operators to provide services which will be successful with both existing and future high-quality services operating on other parts of the dial.

Digital broadcasting on short-, medium-, or longwave (AM) has many advantages when compared to the conventional analogue system we use now.

Podcasting

This is a term that derives its name from the iPod™ manufactured by Apple Incorporated. The iPod is an electronic gizmo that allows downloading files in .mp3 or AAC (Apple iTunes™ format). To date, the primary file download use has been for music for the iPod to be used as a mobile music player. The iPod is manufactured in various hard disk capacities that predict the download of other, larger-sized files, such as video, in the future. The name "podcast" is no longer specifically related to the iPod but to any software and hardware combination that permits the downloading and playing of files in user defined timeframes. The concept of podcast is a new technology application of an electronic broadcast concept "narrowcasting." RSS framework
At heart, RSS is simply a specification that a site uses to produce a page of XML code. The code breaks up each entry or story on a website by title, description and direct link. An aggregator then determines how to display that output in a reader.
For instance, the popular aggregator SharpReader , which runs on Microsoft's .NET framework, displays RSS feeds in a window similar to that of a standard e-mail client. The difference is that the items in the folders are not e-mail messages; they are news stories or individual blog entries.
